From 2011 to 2015, she served as Shadow Minister for Care and Older People on the Official Opposition frontbench of Ed Miliband, although she was not technically a Shadow Cabinet member.
She ran for Labour leadership after the 2015 General Election but lost out to Jeremy Corbyn.
